About Phi Delta Phi...

Phi Delta Phi is the western hemisphere's oldest professional fraternity, having been founded at the University of Michigan School of Law in 1869. It is one of the oldest professional organizations in the United States of America and is the second oldest legal organization in continuous existence in the country (the oldest is the Columbus, Ohio Bar Association, which was founded six months earlier than Phi Delta Phi). It is also the third oldest continually existing legal organization in North America. Phi Delta Phi actually pre-dates the American Bar Association by nine years.

Phi Delta Phi student chapters are called "Inns" after the English "Inns of Court." There are over a hundred active Inns in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. Since its founding in 1869, Phi Delta Phi has initiated almost 200,000 members, including future Presidents of the United States of America (William McKinley, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt, William H. Taft), United States Supreme Court Justices (Chief Justices William H. Taft, William Rehnquist and Earl Warren; Justices Sandra Day O'Connor, Antonin Scalia, John Paul Stevens, Anthony M. Kennedy, Stewart Potter, Hugo Black, Benjamin Cardozo, Byron White, Thurgood Marshall, et. al.), United States Secretaries of State (James A. Baker III), United States Senators and Congresspersons, and renowned legal scholars, among others.

About Pitney Inn...

The Mahlon Pitney Inn of Phi Delta Phi was founded in 2002 at Rutgers University School of Law in Camden, New Jersey, by a small group of students. The Pitney Inn is currently one of the largest student organizations at the law school. Our namesake, Mr. Justice Mahlon Pitney, was a United States Supreme Court Justice from 1912 to 1922. He was born in Morristown, New Jersey on February 5, 1858. Mr. Justice Pitney also served as a New Jersey state senator, on the New Jersey Supreme Court, and as a New Jersey representative to the United States Congress. Mr. Justice Pitney's brother, John, along with John Hardin, founded the Northern New Jersey law firm of Pitney, Hardin, Kipp & Szuch LLP in 1902. His sons, Shelton and Mahlon Jr., became partners in the firm in the early '20s and one of his grandsons, James, became a partner in 1958. Mr. James C. Pitney still resides in New Jersey and graciously allowed us to honor his grandfather and family in the naming of our Inn. Incidentally, Mr. Justice William Brennan was a partner in Pitney, Hardin prior to his appointment to the United States Supreme Court.

Why Join a Legal Fraternity?

To quote our national office, "Different individuals seek different goals and objectives. There are those who believe that camaraderies, good fellowship and promotion of the highest standards of professional and personal ethics and performance justify affiliation. Others seek more tangible benefits: scholarships, student loans, regional and international meetings and conventions and other benefits made possible by membership."

We are not a 'fraternity' in the commonly-accepted sense of the word. Membership is open to all law students in good standing, regardless of sex, race, religion, sexual preference, or personal belief. We are, however, a fraternity in many other respects. We promote leadership and a strong sense of friendship in our ranks and in the law school community in general. We work to help other organizations meet their membership and organizational goals. And we give back to the community. If you are interested in joining Phi Delta Phi, click on the Join! link to the left for more information.
